During Trimester 2, we saw some challenges with consistent attendance across the district. We know that winter illnesses played a big role in that, and we appreciate families doing their best during a tough season. As we move into Trimester 3 and leave the winter months behind, let’s work together to make regular attendance a priority. Being in school every day helps students stay connected, continue learning and finish the year strong!

Below you’ll see some of our Trimester 2 attendance data as we reflect and work toward even stronger attendance in Trimester 3. Thank you for partnering with us to support student success!

Once again, APS will be participating in the MI Student Voice Perception Survey for all parents and staff, and for students in grades 5-12th only.
The MI Student Voice Perception Survey helps schools better understand students’ experiences in school. The survey asks students and parents about their sense of engagement, belonging, and social-emotional learning so their voices can help guide school and district improvement efforts. This feedback provides a broader picture of school quality and helps inform decisions about instruction, supports, and school environments beyond academic test scores.

The Parent Survey will be open from Monday, March 9th, through 4 pm on Friday, March 20th.

Mr. Sandro from Alma High School met with 8th graders today during Social Studies to introduce the high school scheduling process. A series of forms were handed out, including a letter inviting parents to a meeting at the high school if they need guidance or have questions.

Correction from the letter: The meeting will be on Monday, March 9th at 6:30 PM in the high school library.

Attendance matters at APS. Encourage your student to participate in the classroom by joining in and asking questions! When students are engaged, they show up!

Did you know March is Music in Our Classrooms Month? To acknowledge this occasion and highlight the importance of music education, we would like to spotlight our amazing music programs here at APS. We know music education is important at every grade level, and we are proud to provide quality opportunities for all our students. One of these opportunities is our awesome middle/high school band program. Under Tim Newman’s direction, these students have consistently earned top ratings at concert band, marching band and jazz festivals.

Mr. Newman enjoys getting to know his students and seeing them grow, in some instances, over the course of seven years (from 6th grade band through senior year of high school). “My favorite part of teaching band at APS is seeing students grow as people, as a community and as musicians during the time I get to have them in class,” said Newman.

“Any student who engages with the skills necessary to be a successful musician is learning skills that will set them up for success in any future endeavor. A musician learns discipline, delayed gratification, perseverance, problem solving skills, relying on others and having others rely on you, responsiveness, patience, creativity, self-reflection and dedication just to name a few that first come to mind,” said Newman. “The present and future version of every student will benefit from developing these attributes. Further, music itself is important to study because it connects us with our humanity and helps us understand the world through sound. While one can appreciate music without learning to play or sing, I believe the best way to understand and connect with music is through making music firsthand, which is what students do in our music classes.”

We wrapped up Trimester 2 with a little extra fun! 🎉

During the last hour of our half day on Friday, students enjoyed games and activities in the cafeteria, gym, and library. Even better — teachers were not required to attend and supervise, but chose to come spend time with students and celebrate alongside them. 🧡🖤

It was a great way to recognize everyone’s hard work and finish the trimester strong. So proud of our Panthers! 🐾🧡🖤

Last week our Band and Choir students put on two great concerts ! 🎶

We are so proud of all the hard work they’ve put in. Their performances were awesome, and it was great to see so many families there to support them.

Nice job to all of our musicians and singers! 👏🎵

Maintaining an open and positive dialogue about school can be the difference between your student attending school consistently or missing important learning opportunities.

Checking in matters. Attendance matters.
