Day One of Spring Break Camp was Explorer Day!

The kids worked as teams to use compasses and maps, they learned what items would sink or float, made binoculars, explorer hats, and maps! Next week kicks off with S'Mores Day! It's sure to be sweet!

Spring Break is a wonderful opportunity for students and families to rest, recharge, and enjoy time together before we return for a busy and exciting April. We hope the week ahead brings your family joy, relaxation, and a chance to reset for the learning still to come. Our school community is also celebrating the incredible success of last night’s AEPTO Family Carnival, where more than 375 families joined us for an evening of fun and connection. The Alma Elementary PTO continues to make a tremendous impact by supporting field trips, classroom resources, PBIS incentives, STEM experiences, and family engagement events across Luce, Pine, and Hillcrest. We are deeply grateful for their partnership and the joy they bring to our school community.https://app.smore.com/n/m1tjn-the-weekly-update-panther-pride

Hillcrest readers participated in a school-wide vocabulary parade today to celebrate March is Reading Month! Each student chose a vocabulary word to display and how they wanted to represent that word. We all enjoyed learning some new words! Ask your student what word stuck out to them today.

The Alma Elementary PTO organizes and funds so many amazing opportunities for our students. Their next special event is the Alma Elementary PTO Carnival! This awesome night of family fun is set for Wednesday, March 25 from 5 pm -7 pm at Alma’s Donald L. Pavlik Middle School. This free event is open to all Luce Road ECLC, Hillcrest Elementary and Pinecrest Elementary students and their families. Pizza, chips and bottled water will be available for purchase.

*** Of course, this event will take a lot of work! Our PTO would greatly appreciate your support. There are a couple ways you can get involved and help make a positive impact for our students. During Trimester 2, we saw some challenges with consistent attendance across the district. We know that winter illnesses played a big role in that, and we appreciate families doing their best during a tough season. As we move into Trimester 3 and leave the winter months behind, let’s work together to make regular attendance a priority. Being in school every day helps students stay connected, continue learning and finish the year strong!

Below you’ll see some of our Trimester 2 attendance data as we reflect and work toward even stronger attendance in Trimester 3. Thank you for partnering with us to support student success!

Once again, APS will be participating in the MI Student Voice Perception Survey for all parents and staff, and for students in grades 5-12th only.
The MI Student Voice Perception Survey helps schools better understand students’ experiences in school. The survey asks students and parents about their sense of engagement, belonging, and social-emotional learning so their voices can help guide school and district improvement efforts. This feedback provides a broader picture of school quality and helps inform decisions about instruction, supports, and school environments beyond academic test scores.

The Parent Survey will be open from Monday, March 9th, through 4 pm on Friday, March 20th.

If you have or know a student at Luce Road, Hillcrest or Pine Avenue Elementary, you are probably familiar with some of the awesome field trips and other special free or low-cost events our elementary schools offer. As much as our dedicated teaching staff love having your students in class, we know supplemental activities are fun and exciting for students, and APS is proud to provide these experiences. They would not be possible though without the hard work and generosity of each member of our Alma Elementary Parent Teacher Organization (AEPTO). 🏫✏️🍎📖

Thanks to the PTO, elementary students have been able to go on great trips to Forest Hill Nature Center, Mt. Pleasant Discovery Museum, Impressions 5 and even baseball games! The PTO also runs an annual Scholastic Book Fair, where up to 50% or the proceeds go back to the school’s library and media center. The schools are awarded “Scholastic Dollars” they can use to purchase classroom supplies too – whatever they need, from books to furniture! And once a month, the PTO brings in volunteers from Art Reach to teach students about a famous work of art! Along with all these amazing opportunities, the PTO hosts additional special events for students and their families like the upcoming carnival at Donald L. Pavlik Middle School (March 25 from 5 pm – 7 pm)!

Most of the funds for all these opportunities come from one big fundraiser – the spring Fun Run – which will take place this year on May 1. Here is a link to learn more about the AEPTO, including how you can get involved and help make a positive impact here at APS! https://www.almaelementarypto.org/

Maintaining an open and positive dialogue about school can be the difference between your student attending school consistently or missing important learning opportunities.

Checking in matters. Attendance matters.
