🌟This week, our firefighting students got hands-on experience with one of the most critical skills in emergency response: vehicle extrication.

Extrication training focuses on safely and efficiently removing victims from vehicles involved in accidents. Students are learning how to assess a scene, stabilize damaged vehicles and use specialized tools like hydraulic cutters, spreaders and rams to gain access to patients. Every step is performed with precision and teamwork, ensuring the safety of both the victim and the rescuers. This process teaches our students skills like critical thinking under pressure, communication and delivering patient care in high stress environments.

🐾We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to Gratiot Towing for generously donating vehicles for our students to train on.🐾

🐾Here at APS, we know the importance of connecting with the greater community. Strong connections benefit students and their families so much. We are very proud to partner with local colleges and universities to welcome their education students into our classrooms and spaces. There is so much our APS students can learn from these future educators and so much they can learn from our students.🐾

We were honored to welcome representatives from the Michigan Department of Education(MDE) to APS today! During their visit, they observed math lessons and had the opportunity to see firsthand the engaging learning experiences taking place in our classrooms. As a participant in a state math grant, this visit provided a chance to showcase how our students and teachers are benefiting from these resources and the impactful work happening across our district.

Our next Staff Spotlight features Jennifer Ferguson, one of our wonderful 4th grade teachers here at Pine Avenue Elementary! We are so fortunate to get to call her a Panther!🧡🖤

Let's learn a little bit more about Mrs. Ferguson in her own words:

🐾Grade/Subject:
I have been teaching fourth grade at Pine Avenue Elementary for four years.

🐾Favorite part of teaching at APS:
I am grateful for the opportunities I have as an educator to build strong relationships and connections with students and staff. I refer to my students as "Fergie's Fourthies" and they know "Once a Fergie Fourthie, always a Fergie Fourthie!" I am extremely fortunate to work with a top-notch school staff.

🐾Hobbies & Interests:
When I am not at school I can usually be found at an activity for one of my children or niece and nephews. I also enjoy traveling (especially chasing waterfalls), reading, thrifting, jigsaw puzzles and attending concerts/ sporting events.

🐾When it comes to choosing your child’s school, we know there are infinite factors to consider. With some schools, you might feel like you are sacrificing one great thing for another. Not at APS. We are awesome across the board – and we have the data to support that. Here are a handful of quick facts about just a few of our awesome programs here at APS:

⭐The AHS Concert Band has earned 22 straight Division 1 Ratings at the MSBOA District level. (And we offer Marching and Jazz Band as well!)
⭐The Middle School Choir earned Division 1 Ratings at District and will be performing at State in May. (Can’t wait to support our Middle School Panthers!)
⭐The AHS Choir will be performing at Michigan's Adventure Amusement Park at the end of May. (Counting down the days until this fun trip!)
⭐The Alma High School Drama class performs three productions throughout the school year, including a musical. (Their last show, The Crucible, was amazing!)
⭐There are multiple opportunities for AHS students to take AP and Dual Enrollment Classes to earn college credit, as well as get on the job training as a Co-Op student. (These experiences set our students up for success after high school!)
⭐All our K-5 students have five different Encore classes each week, including Art, Music, PE, Social/ Emotional Learning and STEM. (Talk about well-rounded students!)
⭐The LINKS program allows AHS students to partner with a German student for opportunities for an exchange program. (What an amazing travel opportunity!)
⭐Our 3rd Grade takes a trip to the Silver Lake Sand Dunes to learn more about Michigan geography and history. (Beautiful destination and incredible history!)
⭐Spanish students have the opportunity to travel to a Spanish speaking country to be immersed in the language. (What a fantastic way to apply classroom skills in the real world!)

Here at APS, we know how important it is to be well-rounded, so we make sure our students have every opportunity to explore a variety of unique subjects. We foster creativity and curiosity at every stage. From performing arts to STEM to language, your student is sure to find something they are passionate about here at Alma! The School of Choice window is right around the corner. See why APS is the perfect choice for your student: https://www.almaschools.net/ 🐾

Over the weekend, our Alma campus students competed in the SkillsUSA State Competition, showcasing their technical knowledge, problem solving abilities and hands on skills in real world scenarios.

Alma High School senior Canyon Godfrey earned first place at the regional competition, advancing him to the state level. His expertise was put to the test through a series of challenges involving automotive systems diagnostics, working across multiple vehicle platforms and demonstrating industry standard repair techniques. He was also selected to be featured in a promotional video, highlighting his skill and professionalism!

Mount Pleasant High School junior Alyssa Tokarz and St. Louis Public Schools senior Aidan Sprague competed in the Criminal Justice division, where they were evaluated through realistic law enforcement scenarios. Their tasks included conducting traffic stops, demonstrating proper apprehension procedures and applying their knowledge of legal protocols in fast paced situations.

Firefighting students also faced demanding, hands on assessments that tested their emergency response skills, teamwork and understanding of fire science. Fulton Middle and High School junior Breanna Clewley delivered an exceptional performance, earning a third place finish in the state! What an impressive accomplishment that places her among Michigan’s top competitors!

🐾We are proud of the hard work that our students put into this competition! 🐾
