🐾We would like to extend a warm Panther welcome to our new CTE/GI-TEC Construction Trades teacher Mitchell Acker!🐾Mr. Acker has extensive experience in the construction industry, and we are excited to have him here at APS! Now let's learn a little bit more about Mr. Acker in his own words:
"I have been involved with the construction industry since 2000. Specifically framing and design in the Grand Rapids area, building around 35 homes per year. After earning my teaching degree from Central Michigan University in early 2013, I moved to North Carolina where my wife was working at the time and I began teaching elementary school In Greenville, NC. We soon found out how much we were missing our families and moved back to Michigan in 2016. As a former student in the carpenter shop at Central Michigan University, I was hired full time to assist the Architectural Trades department at CMU. After a two year apprenticeship I received Journeyman status and was promoted to a Journeyman Carpenter Position. I have spent the last eleven years with CMU until a colleague presented the APS posting for a building trades instructor!!!
I look forward to helping students gain more knowledge of both residential and commercial construction industries. I have many construction resources from relationships I have built over the years and I crave the opportunity to connect Gratiot County students with these resources.
Outside of work, I enjoy adventures with my wife and two children. Specifically lots of family fishing and bike riding. We love taking family trips up north to Indian River where we enjoy kayaking, fishing, boating, bike rides and beach time!"
🐾Welcome to APS, Mr. Acker!🐾

During his time as a student at APS, Killian was a member of the National Honor Society and part of the choir and the drama program. He says his involvement in performing arts at APS have helped prepare him for his role as director.
“Being in [the drama program] definitely helped me develop my directing because I was able to take an independent study and assistant direct one of the shows during my time at AHS,” Killian said.
Killian has put these skills to good use in his studies at Alma College too. Having recently completed the credits for a theatre minor, Killian says directing Something Rotten! JR. has been “a sort of capstone project.”
“It is very rewarding to be able to put into practice some of the things I have learned and pass on those lessons to these new actors,” Killian said. "My advice for current students is if you can get your own [doubts] out of the way, you can do so many great things and create so many beautiful things."
🎭For tickets to see Something Rotten! JR, visit GratiotCountyPlayers.com or stop by the box office! Performances are set for Aug. 7,8, 9 and 14, 15, 16.🎭

“The most rewarding part of the project is knowing how many people, especially kids, this work will impact. It is also fun to have all the memories of these places as I walk the halls of each school every day,” Rachel said.
During her time at APS, Rachel was involved in several teams and organizations. Rachel says she has applied the skills she learned during her time at APS to her internship.
“I learned a lot of my foundation (all pun intended!) at APS. I learned how to be a teammate, how to collaborate, how to work hard and how to play harder,” Rachel said. “I also learned how to be a good communicator, how to delegate and how to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.”
🐾We are glad to have Rachel back this summer, and we appreciate the work she has put into making her school a wonderful place for students to learn and grow for years to come!🐾
